MINING HEALTH AND SAFETY MANAGEMENT

Mining in Africa is not only a driver of economic growth but also a test of how well we protect the health and safety of those who make it possible i.e. mine workers, host communities, and the environments in which they live. Effective health and safety management is critical for reasons such as: safeguarding lives, reducing injuries and

occupational diseases, preventing environmental harm, reducing operational costs, improving regulatory compliance, enhancing productivity, protecting reputation, and strengthening community trust.

As the African mining industry grows in scale and complexity, the sector faces both persistent challenges and emerging risks. These range from occupational health issues such as fatigue and mental health, to the safe management of mine waste, water, and energy.

At the same time, new opportunities are arising: advanced technologies, smarter regulation, improved worker engagement, and community-driven partnerships. These trends demand innovation, foresight, and collaboration across the mining value chain.
